Sun Protection Tips for People with Diabetes

As summer approaches and the sun gets stronger, it's important for everyone to stay protected—but especially for those with diabetes. People with diabetes can face extra challenges when it comes to heat and sun exposure.

Why Do People with Diabetes Need Extra Sun Protection?

1. Skin Becomes More Sensitive
Diabetes can make your skin more prone to damage, especially from the sun. Some skin problems like diabetic spots or blisters can get worse in the heat.

2. Slow Wound Healing
If you get sunburnt, your skin may take longer to heal because of diabetes. This raises the risk of infection.

3. Higher Risk of Skin Cancer
Research shows that diabetes may slightly increase your risk of skin cancer. Sun exposure makes this risk worse—so protection is a must.

4. More Sensitive to Heat
Some people with diabetes get overheated more easily. This can cause dehydration or heat-related issues.

5. Risk of Sunstroke (Heatstroke)
Sunstroke is serious and needs quick attention. Symptoms include a high fever, fast heartbeat, dizziness, and confusion. It can even lead to unconsciousness if not treated.

First Aid for Sunstroke

Move the person to a cool place, remove extra clothing, and apply cold packs or wet towels. Give them water or an ORS drink if they’re conscious. Natural remedies like cool black or green tea bags on burns or applying onion juice to the soles of feet may also help.

 


 

Easy Ways to Stay Safe in the Sun

✅ Use Sunscreen:
Choose SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every 2 hours, or after swimming/sweating.

✅ Stay in the Shade:
Avoid stepping out between 10 am and 4 pm. Use hats, scarves, or umbrellas if you must go out.

✅ Drink More Water:
Keep sipping water or natural coolants throughout the day. Dehydration worsens sun damage.

✅ Wear Sunglasses:
Protect your eyes with UV-protective sunglasses.

✅ Check Your Skin Often:
Look out for unusual spots or moles. Tell your doctor if you notice anything new.

✅ Talk to Your Doctor:
If you have diabetes, ask your doctor if you need any extra protection or precautions.
