Rathbreaker Overview: What You Need to Know First

Rathbreaker is the first mandatory boss of Act 2, encountered during the "Earning Passage" quest. He is a physical damage-focused foe with no specific resistances or weaknesses, making him a test of your character's defensive and offensive foundations rather than elemental counterplay.

The fight takes place in a dynamic arena where environmental threats and minions add layers of complexity. Rathbreaker's aggression ramps up as his health drops, introducing new attacks and summoning more minions to overwhelm unsuspecting players.

Where to Find Rathbreaker: Location & Arena Setup

Rathbreaker resides in the Vastiri Outskirts, on the opposite side of the Maraketh Bazaar at Raider's Cliffs. The area is randomly generated, but you'll receive a quest marker guiding you to his location after speaking with Zarka, who tasks you with defeating him to join her caravan.

The arena itself is a desert cliffside, with two critical environmental threats: Sun Clan scavengers on the hills above and open ground where hyena demons spawn. Staying too close to the cliffs exposes you to spear barrages, while venturing too far into the open invites swarms of hyenas.

A pro tip: Lure Rathbreaker to the tip of the cliff. This spot is out of range of the spear-throwers and funnels hyenas into a tight group, making them easier to clear with area-of-effect (AOE) attacks.

Rathbreaker's Moveset: All Attacks & How to Dodge Them

Rathbreaker's attacks are telegraphed with clear animations and audio cues-learning to recognize these is the difference between surviving and being one-shot. Below is a breakdown of his core moves, ordered by frequency and threat level.

Basic Melee Attacks

Rathbreaker's standard attacks include a single sword slash and a claw swipe, both dealing physical damage to targets in front of him. These are slow and easy to dodge: simply roll to his sides or back as soon as he winds up his weapon.

Use the gap between these attacks to land a few hits-this is your safest window for offensive pressure early in the fight.

"Ragh" Combo

This two-part combo starts with a basic sword slash, followed by a ground smash that deals AOE damage in front of him. The smash has a short wind-up, so watch for Rathbreaker lowering his sword after the first slash.

Dodge roll away from the smash area, then reposition to his flank to counterattack. This combo becomes more frequent as the fight progresses.

Charge Attack ("Raaaaagh")

When Rathbreaker stands on his hind legs and roars, he's preparing to charge in a straight line. This attack triggers if you're too far from him, so stay close but not too close to avoid it.

As soon as you hear the roar, roll perpendicular to his line of sight-this will let you avoid the charge entirely. After the charge, Rathbreaker has a short cooldown, giving you a chance to deal damage.

Shockwave Slashes ("Hehehehehe")

Rathbreaker swings his sword twice, sending two adjacent shockwaves forward that leave damaging lines on the ground. This attack is telegraphed by him pulling his sword back toward his shoulder.

Move perpendicular to the shockwaves or roll backward to avoid the lines. The shockwaves deal significant damage, so never stand in their path.

Ground Smash ("Hahaha")

This devastating overhead smash hits a large area in front of Rathbreaker, dealing massive physical damage. A red indicator will appear on the ground just before he strikes.

Dodge roll toward his back as soon as the indicator appears-this not only avoids the damage but also puts you in a perfect position to attack his blind spot.

Minion Summons ("Call for Help")

When Rathbreaker's health drops to around 65%, he will summon swarms of hyena demons that rush toward you. These minions add pressure and can quickly overwhelm you if ignored.

Prioritize clearing hyenas with AOE attacks before focusing back on Rathbreaker. Leaving them alive will force you to split your attention, making it harder to dodge his main attacks.

Spear Barrages

Throughout the fight, Sun Clan scavengers on the POE 2 Divine Orbs for sale cliffs fire spears at you. Periodically, they unleash a full barrage that covers a wide, straight line. 

Keep moving to avoid single spears, and watch for the telltale sound of a barrage-when you hear it, roll out of the line of fire immediately. Staying near the center of the arena (or the cliff tip) minimizes this threat.
