Netflix has officially commenced filming for "Outlaw King," a historical drama centered on Robert the Bruce, the legendary Scottish monarch. Director David Mackenzie has reunited with Chris Pine following their successful collaboration on the Oscar-nominated "Hell or High Water."

The production, which began shooting across historical Scottish locations, features an impressive ensemble including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Tony Curran, Stephen Dillane, and Billy Howle. The film is being produced through Sigma Films, a Glasgow-based production company founded by Mackenzie and Gillian Berrie, in partnership with Anonymous Content.

Set during a pivotal year in Scottish history, the screenplay explores how Robert the Bruce fought to reclaim his position after being crowned King of Scots, only to face defeat and become an outlaw when confronted by English occupying forces. Mackenzie describes it as "one of the great comeback stories of history" featuring "an early form of guerilla warfare against a vastly bigger, better resourced enemy."

The director expressed enthusiasm about filming in Scotland during autumn, his preferred season for shooting, stating he looks forward to capturing the story "in the beautiful Scottish elements - come rain, shine, storm or snow." Filming locations include the historical site believed to be the final resting place of the Scottish king.
