 Khordipour believes that promise rings are a remnant of the Roman Empire. He explains that Romans waited a specified amount of time to marry and they gave their partners promise rings as a mark of commitment.

 In the 14th-century, the romantic posy was created as a way to show affection between lovers. This particular piece is also spelled as "poesy", a band that was engraved in Latin, French or other languages with a romantic phrase. Acrostic rings of the 19th Century cleverly spelled words like "regard", or "dearest," in gemstones.
