How a Lactation Consultant Can Help With Difficult Latching

Breastfeeding is often described as something natural that automatically becomes easy after delivery. But for many new mothers, the first few weeks can be challenging. One of the most common difficulties is getting the baby to latch properly.

A poor latch can make breastfeeding painful, leave the baby unsatisfied, and make mothers worry about whether their baby is getting enough milk. This is where a Lactation Specialist can provide practical, personalised support.

What Is a Good Latch?

A latch refers to the way a baby attaches to the breast during breastfeeding. A good latch allows the baby to take in enough of the nipple and surrounding areola so that milk can flow effectively.

Some common signs of a good latch include:

The baby's mouth is opened wide.

The baby takes in a good portion of the areola.

The baby's lips are turned outward.

Feeding feels comfortable rather than painful.

You can hear or notice swallowing during feeding.

The baby appears relaxed while feeding.

If the baby is only sucking on the nipple, repeatedly slipping off, or causing significant pain, the latch may need adjustment.

Why Do Babies Have Difficulty Latching?

There can be several reasons why a newborn struggles to latch. Sometimes the baby is still learning how to coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing. Other times, the mother's breast shape, nipple position, engorgement, or discomfort may make attachment more difficult.

A baby may also have difficulty latching if they are very sleepy, overly hungry, or unsettled. Premature babies and babies with certain oral or physical challenges may need additional support.

Importantly, struggling with latch does not mean that a mother is doing something wrong. Breastfeeding is a learning process for both mother and baby.

How Can a Lactation Consultant Help?

A Lactation Consultant is trained to support mothers with breastfeeding concerns, including positioning, attachment, feeding patterns, and milk supply concerns.

During a consultation, the consultant may first ask about the baby's feeding routine, how often the baby feeds, whether breastfeeding is painful, and any concerns the mother has noticed.

They may then observe a feeding session. This allows them to understand what is happening rather than simply giving general advice.

1. Checking the Baby's Position

Positioning can make a significant difference to the latch. A Lactation Consultant can show the mother how to position the baby's head, neck, shoulders, and body so the baby can approach the breast comfortably.

Small changes in positioning can sometimes make breastfeeding much easier.

2. Teaching Better Latching Techniques

A consultant can demonstrate different ways of helping the baby attach to the breast. They may guide the mother on how to hold the breast, bring the baby toward the breast, and recognise when the baby's mouth is open wide enough.

Instead of simply saying "latch the baby properly," they can show the mother what a comfortable and effective latch should look and feel like.

3. Helping With Breastfeeding Pain

Some initial tenderness can occur when breastfeeding begins, but ongoing or severe pain should not simply be ignored.

A Lactation Specialist can assess whether the baby's latch or positioning may be contributing to nipple pain. They can also help identify situations where further medical assessment may be appropriate.

Getting support early can prevent a small breastfeeding problem from becoming a bigger source of stress.

4. Supporting Mothers With Engorgement

Very full or engorged breasts can sometimes make it difficult for a newborn to attach properly. The breast may feel firm, making it harder for the baby to take a comfortable mouthful.

A lactation professional can explain techniques that may help make the breast easier for the baby to latch onto and can provide guidance on feeding or expressing milk appropriately.

5. Understanding Whether the Baby Is Feeding Effectively

Many mothers worry that their baby is not getting enough milk simply because the baby wants to feed frequently.

A Breastfeeding consultant  can help mothers understand feeding cues, swallowing, feeding patterns, and other signs that can indicate whether feeding is going well. If there are concerns about the baby's intake or weight gain, the consultant can also recommend discussing them with the baby's pediatrician.
