Potency Numbers Are Batch Measurements, Not Brand Promises

The THC percentage has become the dominant number in cannabis retail, and it is routinely misread. It measures one batch, tested by one lab, under one state's rules. It is not a property of the brand.

Where the number comes from

In licensed markets a sample from each batch goes to a state-licensed testing facility, which reports potency alongside screens for residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial contamination. The figure that reaches the box is that lab's measurement of that sample.

Batches vary. Genetics, growing conditions, harvest timing and extraction all move the number. A catalogue of muha meds cart listings showing a spread from the low eighties to the low nineties is showing you real measurement. Perfect consistency across a whole range would be the surprising result.

Why the highest number is not the best product

Extraction sets an effective ceiling before anything else does. Distillate tests highest because it has been stripped of nearly everything that is not cannabinoid. Live resin tests lower because more of the plant survives into the product — which is the entire reason people buy it.

So comparing a fernway cart tagged live resin against a distillate select cart on percentage alone compares two different design goals. The lower number frequently belongs to the better-tasting product, and shopping strictly on potency systematically selects against flavour.

Total cannabinoids versus THC

Labels sometimes report total cannabinoids rather than THC alone, and the two are not interchangeable. Total cannabinoids includes CBD, CBG, CBN and the rest, so a product listing ninety percent total cannabinoids may contain considerably less THC than one listing eighty-five percent THC directly.

Check which figure is quoted before comparing across brands. A mad labs thc listing and a cresco thc listing may be quoting different measures entirely, and the comparison means nothing until you know which.

Lab variation is real

Different laboratories testing the same sample do not always return the same number. Method differences, sample handling and, in documented cases, competitive pressure to report favourable results all contribute. Several states have investigated potency inflation, and regulators now track it.

This is a reason to treat small gaps as noise. The difference between a stiiizy carts listing at 87 percent and a rythm thc product at 85 is well inside the range testing variation alone could explain.

What the number does not tell you

Potency does not predict experience. Terpene content, the ratio between cannabinoids, quantity consumed and individual tolerance all matter, and none of them appears in the percentage. Two products testing identically can be entirely different to use.

The honest framing is that this figure is a quality-control measurement that happens to be printed on consumer packaging. It was never designed as a shopping metric.

A better way to read a listing

Look at extract type first, then fill weight, then potency — in that order. A jeeter cart or turn carts listing stating all three gives you enough for a real comparison. A boutiq weed listing quoting only a percentage is offering the least informative of the three numbers on its own.

And treat every figure as batch-specific, because that is exactly what it is.

Information only, and not medical advice. Cannabis products are for adults 21 and over. Availability is governed by state law and differs by state; confirm what is legal where you are before ordering. Potency figures quoted on any listing are batch measurements taken under a specific state's testing rules, not brand-wide guarantees.
