Educational technology company Instructure has acknowledged that a cyberattack resulted in the theft of user data, with the notorious ShinyHunters group taking credit for the incident.

Instructure, headquartered in the United States, is widely recognized as the developer of Canvas, a popular learning management platform used by educational institutions and organizations around the world to handle coursework, assignments, and digital learning activities.

The company initially disclosed the cybersecurity incident on Friday, announcing that it had engaged third-party security specialists and law enforcement to conduct an investigation.

According to the company's updated disclosure, the exposed data appears to include identifying details belonging to users at affected institutions, such as full names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages exchanged between users.

Instructure stated that no evidence has been found to suggest that passwords, dates of birth, government identification numbers, or financial data were part of the breach, though the company noted it would issue further notifications if that assessment changes.

In response to the incident, the company has implemented patches, enhanced its monitoring capabilities, and rotated application keys as a precautionary measure. Users are now required to re-authorize access to Instructure's API in order to receive updated application keys.

The ShinyHunters extortion group has since listed Instructure on its data leak site, making sweeping claims about the scale of the breach. According to the group's posting, the attack impacted nearly 9,000 schools globally and exposed data belonging to approximately 275 million individuals, including students, teachers, and staff members. The group further alleged that billions of private messages and Instructure's Salesforce instance were also compromised.

Instructure has not publicly addressed questions regarding the timeline of the breach or whether the company is facing extortion demands.
