Playing a Warlock in Diablo 4's Lord of Hatred expansion feels rough at first, and that's kind of the point. You're not handed a neat little power spike just for dinging a level. You've got to earn it, usually while your gear is barely keeping up and your skill bar still feels half-finished. It's worth checking your Diablo 4 Items before you start pushing the class quest, because the Soul Shard system asks more from you than a normal unlock quest. Once it clicks, though, the Warlock stops feeling fragile and starts feeling dangerous in that “one mistake and everyone burns” sort of way.

Starting the Soul Shard quest

The quest shows up once your Warlock reaches level 15, and you shouldn't leave it sitting there for too long. A lot of players do that, then wonder why the class feels flat later on. Head into the Dry Steppes and look for Hattar near the route toward Ked Bardu. He gives you “Disciple of the Forbidden,” which is your first proper step into demon binding. The early part isn't flashy. You'll enter the Heretic's Sanctum, clear the usual packs, kill the Bound Hate Priest, and take the Binding Stone. That item matters. Without it, you're just another caster throwing spells at things that hit harder than you'd like.

Choosing your first demon target

After the dungeon, the quest opens up and lets you hunt three demons in whatever order suits you. Ae'grom waits in the Brackish Pans, and he's the one I'd treat with the most respect if your defenses are poor. He wants to get close, slam the ground, and punish anyone who stands still. Laalish is over in the Blistered Barrens, but the annoying part is dealing with the Sorcerer Husks first. They blink away at the worst time, especially if you're using a slower setup. Then there's the Abodian Hellhound at Chambatar Ridge. That fight is less about damage checks and more about not being lazy with movement, because the fire patches stack up fast.

Why level 30 still matters

Getting the system started at level 15 doesn't mean you've seen everything. Some Soul Shard features stay out of reach until level 30, and honestly, that pacing makes sense once you've played the class for a while. The early unlock teaches you the rhythm: bind, adjust, test, and stop pretending you can facetank every pack. Later upgrades give the system more bite. Your shards start shaping how your skills behave, not just adding a bit of damage on top. That's where build identity begins to show up, whether you're leaning into burst windows, curse pressure, or a messier demon-fueled playstyle.

Facing Hattar and claiming the system

The questline sends you back to the Heretic's Sanctum for “Culmination of Ambition,” and by then you can probably guess Hattar hasn't been telling you the full story. You'll fight him alongside Valloch, the demon tied to the last stage of the ritual. It's not a brutal wall if you've kept your weapon, armor, and sockets in decent shape, but don't walk in underprepared. Plenty of players farm, trade, or buy Diablo 4 materials before this point so they can upgrade without wasting time. Once Valloch is bound, the Warlock finally feels like the class it was meant to be: risky, flexible, and built around power you had to take for yourself.
