Over the weekend, movie theaters across Europe saw a surge in attendance thanks to the latest successes of animated and superhero films.

A computer-animated canine adventure, featuring Scooby-Doo, led the box office in several regions. In Australia, the film earned $2 million across 296 theaters, outperforming the high-profile Tom Cruise sci-fi "Minority Report," which made $1.6 million from 329 screens. Warner Bros. highlighted that this opening was 28% higher than "Ice Age," 20% above "Cats & Dogs," and 10% better than "Stuart Little," indicating strong regional appeal.

The popularity extended to the Netherlands, where Scooby-Doo secured the top spot, grossing an estimated $313,000 from 110 screens. In the Philippines, the film garnered $391,000 from 57 screens, surpassing "The Sum of All Fears" by 16%, and became the fifth-largest family film debut in that market, surpassing both "Monsters, Inc." and "Shrek."

In Southeast Asia, the film maintained momentum. In Singapore, it was predicted to continue leading with an estimated $280,000 from 34 theaters, showing only a 27% drop from its opening. Similarly, in Malaysia, the film earned about $114,000 from 25 screens, positioning it ahead of new releases like "Windtalkers."

In Thailand, Warner Bros. estimated Scooby-Doo's second-week earnings at approximately $142,000 from 92 screens, trailing behind "Bad Company."

Meanwhile, "Spider-Man" continued its impressive run, especially in Spain, where it raked in around $5.2 million on 704 screens, setting an all-time record and surpassing "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by 8%. In Portugal, the film collected $555,000 on 94 screens, marking the second-best debut in that market after the Harry Potter series.

In the UK, "Spider-Man" saw a slight decline of 24% in its second weekend, earning about $6.6 million and bringing its total gross to approximately $24.5 million. France experienced a similar dip of 23%, with the film earning an estimated $4.6 million, reaching a cumulative of $14.3 million after 12 days.

Italy, possibly affected by World Cup disappointment, saw a 45% drop in box office performance, with earnings around $13.4 million in its third week. Overall, Sony estimates that "Spider-Man" earned roughly $30 million over the weekend internationally, pushing its overseas total close to $258 million.
