KAWS’ Most Iconic Creations and the Stories Behind Them

KAWS has a rare ability to make people stop and look. His art can appear playful at first—a cartoon-like figure with X-shaped eyes, oversized hands, and a strange mix of sadness and humor. But behind those simple forms are ideas about loneliness, friendship, consumer culture, popular media, and human emotions.

Born Brian Donnelly, KAWS developed his visual language from the New York graffiti scene and later moved between street art, contemporary art, sculpture, design, fashion, and collectible toys. His characters have appeared in galleries, museums, public spaces, clothing collections, and small vinyl figures collected around the world.

What makes KAWS Playeras especially interesting is that his characters do not come with fixed stories. The artist has explained that he prefers viewers to project their own feelings and ideas onto them rather than giving them a strict fictional narrative.

Here are some of KAWS’ most iconic creations and the stories behind why they became so important.

1. COMPANION: The Character That Changed Everything

If one creation represents KAWS more than any other, it is COMPANION.

First introduced as a vinyl figure in 1999, COMPANION combines recognizable cartoon elements with KAWS’ signature skull-and-crossbones head and crossed-out eyes. The character has gloves, shorts, large shoes, and a familiar cartoon-like body, but its expression feels completely different from the cheerful characters that inspired it.

KAWS Air Jordan originally played with recognizable popular imagery because he understood how powerful familiar symbols could be. Instead of creating an entirely new visual language from nothing, he changed things people already knew.

The result was something both familiar and unsettling.

COMPANION can look lonely, tired, thoughtful, playful, or even defeated. That ambiguity is one reason the character remains so powerful. There is no single correct interpretation.

Over the years, KAWS has recreated COMPANION in different colors, materials, poses, and sizes—from collectible vinyl figures to enormous public sculptures. This repeated transformation also challenges the traditional boundary between commercial art and fine art.

2. COMPANION (Passing Through): A Picture of Quiet Sadness

Among the many versions of COMPANION, Passing Through is perhaps one of the most emotional.

In this pose, COMPANION sits with its hands covering its face. At first glance, it looks almost like a cartoon character hiding from the world. But the pose can also suggest grief, exhaustion, anxiety, or deep thought.

The large-scale sculpture was exhibited in different locations and later became available as smaller collectible figures. The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum connected the pose to the tradition of serious contemplative sculpture, while also noting its difference from the famous image of The Thinker.

That contrast captures much of KAWS Figuras appeal. He takes a figure that looks humorous and gives it an emotional weight that viewers may not expect.

Instead of telling us exactly what COMPANION is feeling, KAWS leaves the question open.

3. CHUM: A Cartoonish Figure With a Strong Identity

CHUM arrived in 2002 and quickly became another important part of the KAWS universe.

The character has a rounded, bulbous body and a visual appearance influenced by familiar cartoon and advertising imagery. Like COMPANION, CHUM carries the unmistakable KAWS treatment, including the crossed-out eyes.

CHUM is particularly interesting because it shows how KAWS Sweatshirt can turn a simple silhouette into a recognizable symbol.

The character also demonstrates an important part of KAWS’ creative process: moving the same visual idea between different formats. A character can exist as a drawing, painting, sticker, sculpture, or collectible figure without losing its identity.

This ability to work across pop culture and contemporary art helped KAWS build an artistic language that could reach people far beyond traditional galleries.

4. ACCOMPLICE: The Mischievous Side of KAWS

Another early character is ACCOMPLICE, introduced alongside CHUM in 2002.

ACCOMPLICE shares some of the visual DNA of COMPANION but has its own personality. With its distinctive body and KAWS’ recognizable X eyes, the character feels playful and slightly mysterious.

Its importance is not simply about popularity. ACCOMPLICE helped establish the idea that KAWS was building an entire family of recurring characters, rather than relying on one successful mascot.

That growing cast gave KAWS more freedom to explore relationships, poses, scale, and emotion. His characters could stand alone or appear together, creating new meanings without requiring traditional storytelling.

5. BFF: From Friendship to Emotional Connection

BFF entered the KAWS universe in 2016 and quickly became one of his most recognizable characters.

Compared with COMPANION, BFF feels softer and more approachable. The character has a furry-looking body, bulging eyes, and a rounded form that immediately creates a different emotional impression. KAWS has explained that BFF developed partly from his interest in exploring how a different surface—especially sculpted fur—would interact with light.

The name itself, “BFF,” naturally suggests Best Friend Forever, but KAWS has not created a detailed fictional story for the character.

That is important.

A viewer might see BFF as cute, comforting, lonely, protective, or humorous. Its meaning changes depending on the person looking at it.

In later works, BFF has also appeared interacting with COMPANION. The resulting images can feel almost like moments between friends or family members. The emotional connection comes from the viewer rather than from a fixed storyline.

6. KAWS:HOLIDAY: When Art Became Monumental

KAWS took his characters to another level with KAWS:HOLIDAY, a series of enormous installations that placed COMPANION in unexpected environments.

One of the most memorable examples was a giant inflatable COMPANION at Seoul’s Seokchon Lake in 2018. The sculpture was about 28 meters long, transforming a familiar character into an enormous public artwork.

The project later traveled to other locations, including Taipei, Hong Kong, Virginia Beach, and Japan.

What makes HOLIDAY special is the way it changes the relationship between artwork and audience. You do not have to enter a gallery to experience a giant KAWS sculpture. People can encounter it while walking through a city, visiting a waterfront, or traveling.

This helped turn KAWS’ art into a global visual experience, while keeping the emotional simplicity of COMPANION.

7. ALONG THE WAY: Companionship in Sculpture

ALONG THE WAY is one of KAWS’ most touching sculptural works.

The piece shows two COMPANION figures together, creating a sense of support and companionship. Rather than focusing on one character's emotional isolation, the sculpture introduces the idea of relationships.

The work became part of KAWS’ larger exploration of connection between his characters. Museums have highlighted ALONG THE WAY alongside works such as ACCOMPLICE, CLEAN SLATE, and TOGETHER, showing how KAWS repeatedly explores human-like emotions through simplified cartoon forms.

The figures do not need facial expressions to communicate. Their body positions do the emotional work.

That is one of KAWS’ greatest strengths.

8. FAMILY: KAWS Turns Characters Into a Modern Family Portrait

With FAMILY (2021), KAWS pushed his character universe into another emotional direction.

The large bronze sculpture presents COMPANION, BFF, and CHUM together in a family-like arrangement. SFMOMA describes the work as showing COMPANION and BFF as parent figures alongside smaller, childlike characters.

Suddenly, the familiar KAWS characters feel less like individual mascots and more like people in a shared relationship.

There is no complicated story explaining who they are or what happened before the moment captured in the sculpture. Instead, the viewer fills in the gaps.

Maybe they are a family. Maybe they represent friendship. Maybe they represent different sides of ourselves.

That openness is exactly what makes the work engaging.

Why KAWS’ Creations Continue to Matter

The biggest reason KAWS remains so influential is that his work exists comfortably between different worlds.

His art can be seen as street art, contemporary art, pop art, sculpture, collectible design, or commercial collaboration. He has worked with major brands and designers while continuing to exhibit in major museums.

But the popularity of KAWS is not only about branding.

His characters are simple enough to recognize instantly but emotionally open enough for people to create their own interpretations. The crossed-out eyes may suggest sadness to one viewer and humor to another. A giant COMPANION might feel lonely in one setting and peaceful in another.

That flexibility is the secret behind his visual language.

Final Thoughts

KAWS’ most iconic creations are much more than collectible figures or colorful cartoon sculptures. COMPANION, CHUM, BFF, ACCOMPLICE, HOLIDAY, ALONG THE WAY, and FAMILY form a visual universe where humor and melancholy exist side by side.

KAWS takes familiar ideas from popular culture and transforms them into something quieter and more personal. His characters rarely tell us what to think. Instead, they give us space to see our own emotions in them.
