Partnership Visa NZ 2026: Partner Work Visa Rules and Requirements

0
169

If you want to join your partner in New Zealand and work there, the first step is understanding which Partnership Visa NZ pathway actually applies to you. New Zealand does not have one single “spouse visa”; Immigration New Zealand (INZ) uses different partnership-based visas depending on your partner's immigration status.

For couples where one partner already holds an eligible New Zealand work visa, the Partner of a Worker Work Visa may allow the other partner to live and work in New Zealand. If your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident, a different pathway applies: the Partner of a New Zealander Work Visa.

What Is a Partnership Visa in New Zealand?

A partnership visa is a visa based on your relationship with another person who has a qualifying immigration status in New Zealand.

For work rights, the two key pathways are:

  • Partner of a Worker Work Visa — for partners of eligible New Zealand work-visa holders.
  • Partner of a New Zealander Work Visa — for partners of New Zealand citizens or residents.

Your relationship generally needs to be genuine and stable, and you must provide evidence that you are living together. Marriage alone is not enough. INZ specifically states that partnership applications are assessed carefully and that applicants must provide evidence demonstrating the nature of the relationship.

For a broader overview of available pathways, see our Partnership Visa NZ guide.

Partner of a Worker Work Visa: Who Can Apply?

The Partner of a Worker Work Visa is designed for someone whose partner is in New Zealand on an eligible work visa.

INZ currently lists several situations where a supporting worker cannot support this visa. These include certain short-duration visas, Working Holiday Visas, Recognised Seasonal Employer Limited Visas, Supplementary Seasonal Employment Work Visas and some lower-skilled employment situations.

For AEWV holders, eligibility can also depend on the occupation and remuneration of the supporting worker.

For example, INZ currently states that an AEWV holder working in an ANZSCO level 1–3 job generally needs to earn at least NZD $28 an hour to support a partner work visa. Different thresholds apply to certain level 4–5 jobs, including specific care, transport and Green List situations.

This is one of the most important checks to make before assuming your partner automatically qualifies.

Does the Partner Need 12 Months of Living Together?

Not necessarily.

This is a common misunderstanding about New Zealand partnership visas. The 12-month threshold is particularly important for partnership residence and for determining the duration of some temporary visas, but it does not mean every temporary partner work visa requires 12 months of cohabitation before an application can be made.

For a Partner of a New Zealander Work Visa, if you have lived together for less than 12 months, INZ says the visa will generally be granted for one year, with further applications possible up to three years in total. If you have lived together for at least 12 months, the visa can be granted for up to three years.

What Evidence Do You Need?

The relationship evidence is often the most important part of a partnership application.

INZ looks at evidence such as:

  • how long you have been together;
  • how long you have lived together;
  • shared finances and responsibilities;
  • evidence of spending time together;
  • photographs and communications;
  • evidence that other people recognise the relationship; and
  • other information showing that the relationship is genuine and stable.

Useful supporting documents can include joint tenancy agreements, correspondence to the same address, shared financial records, utility accounts, travel records and other evidence showing an established shared life.

The strongest applications usually tell a consistent story across multiple evidence categories. A large collection of unrelated photographs, for example, is not necessarily as persuasive as a smaller but well-organised set of documents showing where you lived, how you shared responsibilities and how your relationship developed.

Partner Work Visa NZ: What Work Rights Do You Get?

A Partner of a Worker Work Visa allows the holder to work in New Zealand, study for up to three months and travel in and out of the country. A New Zealand job offer is not required simply to apply for the visa.

However, work conditions can depend on the supporting partner's circumstances. INZ also explains that some existing partner work visas with conditions may be eligible for a change to open work rights when the supporting partner meets the relevant requirements.

For detailed information about the worker pathway, see our Partner Work Visa NZ service guide.

How Much Does a Partnership Work Visa Cost?

As of September 2026, INZ lists the starting application fee for both the Partner of a Worker Work Visa and the Partner of a New Zealander Work Visa at NZD $1,630. Fees can change, so applicants should confirm the amount shown by INZ when submitting their application.

Additional expenses may arise from medical examinations, police certificates, document translation and other application-related requirements.

How Long Does Processing Take?

Current INZ estimates state that 80% of Partner of a Worker Work Visa applications are processed within 5.5 weeks, while 80% of Partner of a New Zealander Work Visa applications are processed within 8 weeks. These are processing estimates rather than guarantees, and applications requiring additional information may take longer.

Submitting a complete application with well-organised evidence can help reduce avoidable delays.

Common Partnership Visa Mistakes

Several problems can weaken an application:

Relying only on a marriage certificate. Marriage establishes a legal relationship, but INZ still assesses whether the couple are living together in a genuine and stable partnership.

Assuming the supporting partner automatically qualifies. A work visa does not automatically mean the holder can support a partner work visa. The type of visa, occupation, remuneration and other conditions can matter.

Submitting inconsistent dates. Dates in tenancy documents, travel records, application forms and relationship statements should make sense together.

Ignoring periods of separation. If you have lived apart, explain when and why this happened and how the relationship was maintained. INZ specifically considers separation circumstances when assessing partnership evidence.

Confusing temporary partnership visas with residence. A temporary partner work visa is not the same as a Partner of a New Zealander Resident Visa. Partnership residence normally requires at least 12 months of living together at the time of application.

What Is the Best Way to Prepare a Partnership Visa Application?

Start with the supporting partner's immigration status, not the marriage certificate.

First, identify the exact visa your partner holds and confirm that they can support the relevant partnership pathway. Next, build a chronological relationship history and collect evidence covering shared accommodation, finances, responsibilities and time spent together.

Then check health, character, passport and financial requirements before submitting the application.

The goal is not simply to provide as many documents as possible. It is to provide credible, consistent evidence that clearly demonstrates the relationship you are claiming.

Final Takeaway

The biggest mistake with a Partnership Visa NZ application is assuming that being married or having a partner in New Zealand automatically creates work rights. Eligibility depends on the supporting partner's status, the specific visa pathway, your living-together evidence and the wider requirements applied by INZ.

For 2026 applications, check the current INZ rules immediately before applying because fees, processing estimates and supporting-partner requirements can change.

If your case involves an AEWV, previous periods of separation, limited cohabitation evidence or uncertainty about which partnership pathway applies, professional immigration advice can help identify problems before the application is lodged.
