For the people tasked with cutting and installing them, the reality is less glamorous. One slip during fabrication and a premium slab becomes rubble on the workshop floor. The margin for error is razor-thin, and the consequences are expensive. Knowing what goes wrong—and how to prevent it—is the first step toward consistent, clean results.
How size changes the rules
A porcelain panel measuring over 15 inches per side does not follow the same rules as a 300mm bathroom tile. Its expanded surface area carries and amplifies internal stresses formed during kiln firing. When a blade introduces a line of separation, those dormant forces release suddenly and often unpredictably. The crack can race well past your intended cut.
Modern production methods have also reduced panel thickness. Many slabs are just 6mm to 9mm thick, which saves weight but introduces brittleness. Large format tiles at that profile will bend on an imperfect surface without any external force applied. That bending creates stress fractures you cannot see until the piece fails under the blade.
Source matters enormously. A warped or under-fired panel defeats even the most meticulous cutting setup. Align the rail to your mark and lock the guide bar in place. Draw the scoring wheel across the panel in one confident, steady pass. Irregular shapes, pipe penetrations, and corner notches require a diamond blade and active water cooling. The single most damaging mistake here is impatience. For L-shaped cuts around doorways or utility openings, complete the short leg first on the wet saw. Then use the rail cutter to snap the longer leg. This order protects the corner from premature shearing and is the accepted sequence among experienced professionals.
Moving and storing panels safely
Damage during handling is the most avoidable cost on any project. Gripping a panel by its edges causes flex, and that flex embeds latent stress into the body. The next blade pass may find that weak spot and crack the slab without warning. Large format tiles should always travel on paired suction cups.
Store every panel vertically on padded A-frame racks. Flat storage on a workshop floor exposes the surface to dropped tools, debris, and accidental impact. Vertical orientation is the minimum standard for safekeeping these materials.
