Red eyes are usually caused by changes in the small blood vessels on the surface of the eye. These vessels can become more visible when they widen or become irritated, giving the whites of the eyes a pink or red appearance. Eye Care Hospital in Thrissur
Lack of sleep is one common reason for temporary redness. Long periods of screen use can also contribute, particularly when reduced blinking causes the eyes to become dry. Exposure to smoke, dust, strong wind, or other airborne irritants may produce a similar effect.
Allergies are another frequent cause. When the eyes come into contact with an allergen, they may become red, itchy, and watery. Unlike some other causes of redness, allergy-related irritation is often accompanied by significant itching.
Contact lens wear can sometimes contribute to redness as well. Wearing lenses for longer than recommended, sleeping in lenses that are not designed for overnight use, or using poorly maintained lenses can irritate the eye and increase the risk of complications.
Not every red eye is harmless. Infections can cause redness along with discharge, swelling, or discomfort. Other eye conditions may cause redness together with pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, or a noticeable change in vision.
Sudden redness accompanied by severe pain or reduced vision deserves prompt medical attention. These symptoms can sometimes indicate a problem that requires urgent treatment.
For mild irritation, removing the source of the irritation, resting the eyes, and avoiding unnecessary rubbing may help. However, repeatedly experiencing unexplained redness is a reason to look beyond the surface symptom and consider whether an underlying eye problem is present.
The appearance of a red eye can provide a useful clue, but redness alone does not reveal its cause. A proper eye examination can distinguish between simple irritation and conditions that require specific treatment.
