Diffraction gratings for pulse compression are critical optical components used primarily in Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) laser systems. CPA technology—for which the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in 2018—enables the generation of ultra-short, ultra-high-intensity laser pulses (femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses) without destroying the optical amplifying medium. Pulse compression gratings temporally compress a stretched, amplified laser pulse by dispersing different spectral components across varying optical path lengths.

End-Use Applications and Demand Catalysts

  • Industrial Micromachining: Ultra-short pulse (USP) lasers are widely utilized in precision micro-drilling, semiconductor wafer dicing, medical device manufacturing, and glass cutting. Because femtosecond laser energy is delivered faster than heat can diffuse into surrounding material, it enables "cold ablation," eliminating thermal damage.

  • Scientific Research and Medicine: High-energy petawatt laser facilities, medical eye surgery tools (like LASIK and femtosecond cataract surgery), and spectroscopy laboratories rely on pulse compression gratings to maintain temporal pulse purity.

Manufacturing and Material Innovations

Compressor gratings must withstand extreme peak optical power densities without undergoing laser-induced damage. The market is increasingly adopting Transmission Gratings and Dielectric Gratings (such as Multilayer Dielectric / MLD gratings) made on fused silica substrates. MLD gratings offer exceptionally high diffraction efficiency (exceeding 99%) and high laser damage thresholds (LDT), supporting the industry's push toward higher-power industrial laser systems.
