Choosing a starter in Path of Exile 2 version 0.5 isn't just about picking the skill with the flashiest preview. You're trying to get through the campaign without begging your gear to carry you. Early damage matters. So does movement, screen safety, and how soon the build starts feeling "online." A starter that works with basic rares will always beat a clever setup that needs perfect rolls. Falling Thunder can be very strong for Amazon or Martial Artist players, but I wouldn't call it the safest blind Day 1 pick. It looks more like a Day 2 swap once you've got some gear, a bit of currency, and enough patience to fix the rough edges.
Spells and minions need a practical eye
Spell builds can be excellent, but you've got to think beyond damage numbers. Spark can fill the screen and feel great, then become messy once cast triggers enter the picture. Ball-heavy setups have the same issue. If your machine struggles, your build shouldn't be your biggest enemy. Essence Drain and Contagion tend to be calmer, cleaner, and easier to read during bosses. Totems may suit players who like a slower, safer pace, though they still need testing in this patch. For minions, don't get baited by early wolves if they're falling over in campaign zones. Animal Legion looks much better later. Tactician-style bulky summons are safer from the start because they actually hold space for you.
Skip the bait and fund the build properly
The worst starter is usually the one that looks amazing in a finished showcase but awful at level 38. Twister-based setups are a classic trap when they need loads of attack speed before they stop feeling sluggish. Grenade Witchhunter can be fun if you already enjoy trap-like timing, but it's not for everyone. Djinn-themed choices also seem too shaky for a clean fresh start right now. Pick something that works early, earns steadily, and lets you change later.
