My personal experience as a scientist in nations such as Kenya, Brazil, and Mexico has highlighted the interactions between human beings and nature's ecosystems. I've witnessed firsthand the plight of communities as they navigate the pressures exerted on these vital systems. In 2009, my involvement in creating a groundbreaking methodology for science-based climate targets set off a movement that now boasts over a thousand participating entities.

Currently, as a part of Netflix, I am grateful for the opportunity to merge scientific insights with impactful storytelling, as our mission is to entertain global audiences. However, fostering this entertainment requires a planet that remains livable. The consensus among scientists is clear: to mitigate the dire consequences of climate change, we must keep the temperature increase below 1.5ºC—this is crucial for preserving the essential life-support systems for future generations.

To facilitate this vision, we pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the close of 2022 and continue this commitment in the following years. Our strategy, "Net Zero + Nature," unfolds in distinct steps:

1. Emissions Reduction

We are prioritizing the decrease of our internal emissions, aiming for a 46% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, in alignment with the Paris Agreement's benchmarks.

1. Carbon Retention Initiatives

By the conclusion of 2021, we aimed to neutralize unavoidable emissions by investing in vital projects designed to prevent carbon release into the atmosphere. This includes efforts to conserve threatened ecosystems, particularly tropical forests critical to climatic stability.

For instance, our contribution to the Lightning Creek Ranch project in Oregon epitomizes our efforts to retain rich ecosystems—supporting the preservation of North America's largest bunchgrass prairie. In Kenya, we are collaborating with the Kasigau Corridor project, safeguarding dryland forests that sustain countless endangered species while offering local communities sustainable livelihood alternatives.

Our reduction methods are aligned with criteria set forth by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). We are proud to be participants in the U.N.'s Business Ambition for 1.5°C initiative and the “America Is All In” alliance, devoted to fulfilling the Paris Agreement's climate goals.

Our strategic approach was shaped by consultations with over 60 experts, ranging from researchers and environmental advocates to representatives from prestigious organizations. We seek the guidance of an independent advisory group composed of thought leaders in the field, reflecting a range of perspectives.

Understanding our carbon footprint is paramount. Our 2020 emissions totaled approximately 1.1 million metric tons, with production activities accounting for around half of that total, including Netflix-branded content produced directly or through collaborations. Additional emissions arose from corporate operations and cloud services.

To tackle emissions associated with streaming, we are collaborating with the Dimpact initiative to establish consensus on measuring the streaming industry's ecological footprint, determining strategies for its reduction.

For example, the documentary series "Our Planet" captured the attention of 100 million households, while "My Octopus Teacher" received an Oscar nomination for its poignant storytelling.
